How Rondovue works

We don't sell insurance. We help you find it, understand it, and buy it from trusted third-party providers — before you ever reach the rental counter.

1

The problem we're solving

When you rent a car, the counter agent offers you CDW for $25–35/day. Most people have no idea whether they need it, whether their credit card covers them, or whether there's a cheaper option. So they say yes — and overpay by 50–70% for coverage they might already have.

2

What third-party coverage is

Providers like Bonzah and RentalCover sell underwritten insurance policies that cover the same damage scenarios — plus many that the counter CDW excludes — for a fraction of the price. Buy before you pick up the car, get a policy by email, and confidently decline the counter upsell.

3

What we do

We compare providers side by side in plain English and route you to the right one for your trip. We earn a referral fee when you buy — that's how the site stays free.

4

What we don't do

We don't sell insurance directly. We don't process claims. We're not an insurance company. Think of us as the Consumer Reports for rental car coverage.

Who we recommend

Every provider has been manually reviewed for coverage quality, claims reputation, and pricing transparency.

Rental desk vs third-party coverage: what's the real difference?

5 min read · Updated April 2026

Every time you rent a car, the counter agent offers you a CDW — collision damage waiver. It sounds important. It is important. But what they're not telling you is that you can buy the same protection for 50–70% less before you arrive.

What the counter is actually selling you

A CDW from the rental company waives your financial responsibility if the car is damaged or stolen. The counter price is $25–35/day because the rental company is making significant margin on it.

What third-party providers offer

Providers like Bonzah and RentalCover sell underwritten insurance policies that cover the same scenarios — plus many the counter CDW excludes, like tire damage and lost keys — at significantly lower prices.

The key difference: how claims work

With counter CDW, damage is handled directly — you don't pay out of pocket. With third-party coverage, you pay first and file for reimbursement (typically paid within 3–5 days). Slightly more paperwork, significantly less cost.

What neither covers

Neither covers liability — damage to other people's property or injuries. For that, you need your personal auto insurance or a supplemental liability product.

Bottom line

Third-party coverage covers the same core scenarios as counter CDW, often more, and costs 50–70% less. For most travelers, it's the right call.

Do I actually need rental car insurance?

Short answer: probably yes, but not necessarily from the rental counter.

Step 1: Check your credit card

Cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and Capital One Venture X offer primary rental car coverage. If you charge the full rental to one of these, you may be fully covered for collision and theft — for free.

Secondary coverage cards (most cards) pay only after your personal auto insurance, meaning you'd still file with your own insurer first — which can raise your rates.

Step 2: Check your personal auto policy

Your personal auto policy typically extends to US rentals — but with your deductible, and a potential premium increase after a claim.

Step 3: What's not covered anywhere

Credit cards and personal policies rarely cover tire and glass damage, loss-of-use fees (days the car is in the shop), or admin fees. Third-party providers like RentalCover do.

Quick decision guide
✓ Primary coverage card → buy third-party only for tire/glass gaps
✓ Secondary coverage card → consider third-party to avoid your personal insurer
✓ No travel card → buy third-party. It's cheap and covers you fully
✓ Renting internationally → always buy third-party

You have more options than the counter agent wants you to know about. Here they are, ranked by value.

1. Bonzah — Best overall value
Purpose-built rental car insurance, primary coverage, $7–10/day. Best for US rentals where you want straightforward protection without involving your personal insurer.
2. RentalCover — Best for international and comprehensive coverage
Covers tire, glass, undercarriage, keys, and loss-of-use fees. $9–12/day, works in 140+ countries.
3. Primary coverage credit card — Best if you already have one
Chase Sapphire and Capital One Venture X offer primary CDW. Free if you already have the card. Gaps: no tire/glass, no liability, limited internationally.
4. Personal auto policy — Use with caution
Extends to rentals but comes with your deductible and can raise your premium.
5. Rental counter CDW — Last resort
$25–35/day for coverage you can get elsewhere for $8–12. Not worth it in almost any situation.
